Iron Man 2008

Launching with a movie as great as Iron man, is it any wonder that the MCU became the juggernaut success that it is today? Director Jon Favreau has crafted the perfect launch pad for this huge shared universe without suffocating the film with teases to future releases (I’m looking at you BvS).

Casting Robert Downey Jr as the “Genius, Billionaire, Playboy, Philanthropist” was an incredibly smart choice, balancing over confident rich boy with conflicted humanitarian, he pulls it off perfectly. All supporting stars are excellent, including Jeff Bridges who plays the role of Starks Business partner, he comes into his own in the final stages of the film and is a joy to watch. Gwyneth Paltrow’s Pepper Potts is instantly lovable and has strong chemistry with Downey from the get go. Terrence Howard is also fantastic as Rhodey and it is a crying shame that we dont see him return to this role in future MCU movies, instead being replaced by Don Cheadle.

Some of the special effects are already looking a little dated, with a lot of ropey firework particles and super imposed fire effects being glaring obvious but most of the action scenes are very well produced, exciting to watch and excellently shot. The escape scene and the desert fight against his previous captives are my standout moments. The final battle, although good, feels like it needed a little more clout and lets the film down a touch in the closing stages.

Pacing is handled well, going for the slow but steady momentum-building. It takes it’s time to develop its character and really give you an understanding of who this man is and the people close to him. It’s why he is still classed as one of the most beloved superheroes of all-time, even after a decade of making mistakes (selling Weapons of Mass Destruction, creating Ultron and kicking the shit out of Captain America… we still cant help but love him)

Iron Man is an outstanding launch pad for the MCU and one can’t help but feel that if this film had not been as great as it is, then we may not have had what is one of the greatest Movie franchises ever to exist. Bravo Marvel!
